Series background & context

Dark Obsession is one of Zoe Blake’s most extreme series, a long, twisting exploration of power, control, and psychological manipulation. It begins with one of her most infamous premises: a man who convinces a young woman she is living in a different era.

In the opening novel, originally published as Ward and later retitled Wicked Games, a wealthy Englishman fixates on an American student he spots at the theater he owns. Instead of approaching her honestly, he orchestrates an elaborate deception, cutting her off from the modern world and gaslighting her into believing she is his ward in a Victorian household. Clothes, language, rules – every piece of her reality is rewritten to suit his fantasy.

Gilded Cage/Sinister Games and Toxic/Savage Games continue their story. Each book pushes the game further, blurring the line between role‑play and imprisonment. The heroine’s resistance never fully disappears, yet her dependence on the hero grows as he closes off escape route after escape route. Marriage becomes another form of captivity. Love and loathing sit side by side.

The later installments, Cruel Games and Vicious Games, shift focus to his brother and expand the world beyond the original house of illusions. The themes stay the same – obsession, stalking, deliberate isolation – but the pairings and circumstances change. Readers see how far this family’s taste for control runs and how easily wealth can erase consequences.

What sets Dark Obsession apart from more conventional dark romance is how little it tries to soften the heroes. They are not misunderstood softies in disguise. They lie, manipulate, and punish to get what they want. The books do not pretend that their behavior would be acceptable outside the heightened, fictional context.

Because of that, this series is often recommended only to readers already comfortable with the heaviest end of the genre. It is a psychological descent more than a courtship arc, ideal for those who like their fiction to challenge – or even unsettle – them.
