Author bio
Betty Neels wrote cosy, clean romances where everyday work, family duty, and quiet kindness matter as much as the love story. Most of her novels were published by Mills & Boon in the UK and by Harlequin elsewhere, and she produced an astonishingly large backlist across three decades. Her books are comfort reads with sharp edges filed down, the tension comes from manners, misunderstandings and pride, not cruelty.
She was born on September 15, 1909, in Leyton, in what was then Essex, and she spent much of her childhood in Devon. That mix, London bustle and rural calm, shows up again and again in her settings, along with a fondness for villages, big old houses and the routines of working life.
Neels trained as a nurse and also qualified as a midwife. Long before she became a novelist, she was used to long shifts, brisk decisions, and getting on with the job even when things were messy. That steady, competent tone is part of what makes her heroines feel real.
When the Second World War began, she joined the Territorial Army Nursing Service and was posted to France. In 1940 she was evacuated during the German advance, an experience that stayed with her. She was commissioned in 1941 and continued nursing work in the UK, including posts in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
It was in Scotland that she met a Dutchman, Johannes Meijer. They married in 1942, and in 1945 they had a daughter, Charlotte. The family later lived in the Netherlands for years, and Neels kept nursing there, too, meeting doctors and patients in a world that was not quite England and not quite home.
Those Dutch years became the backdrop for a huge slice of her fiction.
Back in England, she continued in nursing and eventually reached the post of Night Superintendent. Retirement didn't turn her into a garden-chair type. One small nudge, a comment she overheard in a library about the lack of good romances, sent her to a typewriter and a blank page.
Her first novel, Sister Peters in Amsterdam, was published in 1969.
From there she built a remarkably consistent body of work, writing 134 romance novels between 1969 and 2000. Readers often come to her for the slow burn, the calm atmosphere, and the way her heroines handle life with their shoulders squared. Books like Saturday's Child, Discovering Daisy, The Convenient Wife, and The Doctor's Girl lean into her favourite ingredients: capable women, highly driven men, and a relationship that has to be earned through small acts of respect. She was clear that her Dutch doctors were not meant to be a portrait of her husband, and instead felt like a blend of the medical men she’d met through years of nursing. Her heroines are often nurses, companions, governesses or secretaries, women who do the unseen work, and the books take their competence seriously. Antiques, family pets and well-meaning relatives wander in and out, too, because in a Neels story, life is never just the couple in a room.
Neels loved animals, reading and old buildings, and she wrote those comforts straight onto the page. She died on June 7, 2001, at the age of 91, but her stories still do the same simple thing well: offer courtesy, warmth and a steady march toward a happy ending.
