Operation Zulu

by Ernest Dempsey

2019

Perennial underachievers Zeke Marshall and Phoenix Underwood are stunned when a secret agency taps them for a mission to stop terrorists from deploying a devastating weapon. With millions of lives at stake, the two lovable screwups have to stumble their way into becoming unlikely heroes.

2

London Calling

by Ernest Dempsey

2019

In their second outing, Zeke and Phoenix race to London to stop the world's most dangerous cyber criminal from unleashing a virus that could crash modern life. Barely qualified and in way over their heads, the pair bounces from disaster to disaster while trying to save the day.

Series background & context

Beta Force is Ernest Dempsey having fun with all the tropes he usually plays straight. Instead of hardened operatives who always have a plan, the series stars Zeke Marshall and Phoenix Underwood, two smart but chronically out of their depth recruits who get tapped for missions that matter far more than anyone should trust them with.

On paper, Beta Force is a top secret counterterror program built to stop new kinds of threats, from experimental weapons to sophisticated cyber attacks. On the ground, it often looks like Zeke and Phoenix stumbling into the right room at the wrong time, improvising wildly to keep the world from burning down around them.

The humour comes from contrast. These are ordinary guys who were always the last ones picked, suddenly told they are humanity's best shot at avoiding disaster. They bicker, crack jokes at the worst possible moments, and make genuine mistakes. The missions go sideways in believable ways, yet somehow the pair keep clawing their way back into the fight.

Underneath the comedy, the stakes still feel real. The villains are ruthless, the technology is frighteningly plausible, and the collateral damage of failure would be measured in millions of lives. Dempsey uses that tension to keep the pages turning while letting readers enjoy lighter banter than in his more serious thrillers.

If you are looking for something fast, funny, and still packed with chases, explosions, and clever twists, the Beta Force books are the breeziest corner of the Ernest Dempsey universe.
