Hell's Gate
by Ernest Dempsey
2020
When a British agent is murdered over a strange artifact, the International Archaeological Agency sends its top researchers, Alex Simms and Tara Watson, into the field. Facing neo Nazis convinced a set of stones will open a literal gateway to hell, the pair must trade microscopes for guns and learn to stay alive outside the lab.
Series background & context
Paranormal Archaeology Division takes the International Archaeological Agency from the Sean Wyatt stories and looks at what happens when its researchers are forced out from behind their desks.
Alex Simms and Tara Watson are a married pair of historians and scientists who usually serve as the brains behind other people's fieldwork. They specialise in the odd cases, the artifacts that do not quite fit known history or the legends that refuse to die. When a murder connected to a strange relic shocks one of their partner agencies, the IAA quietly spins up a new unit just for them.
Their first assignment pits them against a resurgent group of neo Nazis convinced that a set of ancient stones will let them tap into a literal gate to hell and usher in a reborn empire. Alex and Tara suddenly have to trade archived files and lab gear for sidearms, safe houses, and a crash course in surviving ambushes.
Later cases send them to the edges of the world. They trek into South American rain forests in search of an explorer who vanished while hunting for a legendary lost city, and they confront a would be dictator determined to harness an ancient force that blurs the line between science and sorcery. Each mystery starts with a real archaeological puzzle, then twists into something stranger as the clues point to phenomena no one can explain away.
This series leans a bit darker and weirder than the core Sean Wyatt books. You still get globe trotting, codes, and historical detail, but also eerie atmospheres, questions about what counts as proof, and villains obsessed with power on a spiritual as well as political scale.
Through it all, Alex and Tara remain grounded. They bicker like any couple under pressure, care deeply about the people caught in the crossfire, and use their minds as their main weapons. Paranormal Archaeology Division is a good fit if you like your thrillers with a dose of X Files energy and a pair of nerdy heroes who learn how to be very capable under fire.
