Series background & context

The Beka Cooper trilogy, sometimes called Provost's Dog, is a prequel set two centuries before Alanna's time. Instead of noble training yards and royal courts, it drops readers into the narrow streets and crowded taverns of Tortall's capital, where the law is enforced by the bruised and stubborn men and women of the Provost's Guard.

Rebakah Cooper, known as Beka, starts life in the slums of the Lower City. When she is eight, she helps the Lord Provost break a notorious crime ring by passing along what she hears from restless ghosts on the backs of pigeons. In return, he takes her family into his household and gives them a chance at a different kind of life. Years later, Beka repays the favor by joining the Guard herself.

Told through Beka's journal entries, the books follow her first year as a trainee, or Puppy, and her early years as a full Dog. In Terrier she is assigned to two legendary Lower City Dogs, Goodwin and Tunstall, and quickly finds herself chasing both a kidnapper known as the Shadow Snake and a murderous plot involving fire opals and desperate diggers beneath the city.

In Bloodhound, Beka's talent for noticing trouble sends her upriver to Port Caynn to investigate counterfeit silver flooding the kingdom. She is partnered with Goodwin again, joined by the scent hound Achoo, and forced to navigate corrupt officials, dangerous gamblers, and a Rogue who likes her about as much as the local deputy provost does.

Mastiff jumps forward a few years. Beka is now an experienced Dog who has just suffered a personal loss when she is pulled into a secret Hunt involving a kidnapped heir to the throne. The trail drags her, Tunstall, Achoo, and a young mage across wild countryside and into the heart of political betrayal that could break the kingdom.

These books read as fantasy police procedurals, complete with stakeouts, informants, moral gray areas, and the toll that seeing too much violence takes on the people who stand between their neighbors and chaos. At the same time they quietly sketch the history of Tortall, showing how the Lower City and the Rogue's Court became what Alanna and Aly later inherit. For readers who like grounded stakes, street slang, and methodical investigations wrapped in magic, Beka Cooper is a rewarding corner of the Tortall timeline.
