Series background & context
The Song of the Lioness quartet follows Alanna of Trebond, a noble girl who refuses to accept a life she did not choose. In a kingdom where girls are barred from knighthood, she trades places with her twin brother and rides to court disguised as the boy Alan, determined to earn her shield even if it means living a lie.
Most of the series takes place in Tortall, a feudal kingdom of castles, royal courts, and border wars. As a page and then a squire in the palace at Corus, Alanna trains with sword and lance, studies history and tactics, and survives the brutal hazing that comes with being small, outspoken, and different. She builds close friendships with fellow pages and gains powerful allies, including Prince Jonathan, the Thief King George Cooper, and a kindly knight who sees past her disguise.
Keeping her secret is never simple. Alanna must manage the changes of growing up, her developing magical Gift, and the risk of exposure every time she undresses for training or heals a wound. Her victories in the practice yard are balanced by nightmares, injuries, and the constant fear that one misstep will end her dreams.
Across the four books she moves beyond the palace walls, riding with armies, living among the desert Bazhir as a shaman, and facing darker threats that reach into the royal line. A clever, charming sorcerer, Duke Roger of Conte, becomes her most dangerous enemy, and his schemes tangle with her loyalties to crown, comrades, and her own sense of what is right.
Romance threads through the later volumes as Alanna navigates complicated feelings for both Jonathan and George while she is still working out who she wants to be. The books do not tidy away her doubts. Instead they show a heroine who makes mistakes, owns them, and keeps moving.
In tone, Song of the Lioness mixes court training, battlefield danger, and moments of divine interference, complete with a sharp tongued goddess and a mysterious talking cat. It is the foundation of the Tortall universe, and many later series echo back to these events. For most readers, this is the natural starting point for Tortall, especially if you want to watch a stubborn girl grow from uncertain page to legend.
