Series background & context
The Beautifully Broken books are linked contemporary romances about people who look tough from the outside and are barely holding it together underneath. They are emotional, explicit, and built around the idea that love can help, but it does not magically erase trauma.
The first book, If You Stay, sets the tone with Pax Tate and Mila Hill. Pax is angry, self-destructive, and deeply wounded by grief and addiction. Mila is not there to be a saint or a fixer. What makes the series work is that the relationships feel like work from the start. Desire is strong, but so are the messes people bring with them.
Broken is the point.
As the series moves through If You Leave, Before We Fall, and Until We Fly, the focus shifts to connected characters, including Gabe, Maddy, Dominic, Jacey, Brand, and Nora. Some are dealing with war trauma. Some are carrying old family damage. Some are simply experts at pretending they do not need anybody. The books are connected enough that recurring characters matter, but each central romance still gets its own space.
What ties the series together is its interest in real-life pain. Addiction, grief, neglect, shame, survivor's guilt, and the long aftereffects of bad choices all show up here. The men tend to be intense and emotionally cornered. The women tend to be strong, smart, and unwilling to settle for half-truths forever. The chemistry is big, but the emotional fallout matters just as much.
Then My Peace circles back to Pax and Mila later on, which is a smart reminder that recovery is not a neat finish line. Even when a couple gets their hard-won happy ending, life still has a way of testing the weak spots.
If you want romance with a lot of heat, a lot of hurt, and people who have to earn their peace, this is probably the Courtney Cole series to start with.
