Alex London Books in Order

Alex London was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and grew up there as the kind of kid who spent plenty of time daydreaming. He has said he stood in the Little League outfield making up stories while the game kept happening around him, which was fun for his imagination and not especially helpful for his baseball career.

Stories were there early.

London later moved to New York to attend Columbia University, where he studied philosophy. After college, a talk by Chris Crutcher pushed him in a direction he had not expected. He left a job assisting a movie agent, earned a master's degree in library science from Pratt Institute, and became a young adult librarian with the New York Public Library. Books had moved from pastime to everyday work.

Then life got louder. Before turning to fiction full time, London worked as a journalist and human rights researcher, reporting from conflict zones and refugee camps. He has written about surviving an erupting volcano, a hurricane, several civil wars, and one very unfortunate bite on his little toe in Thailand. That background helps explain why even his most entertaining novels still care about power, danger, and what happens when ordinary people get trapped inside systems they did not build.

His young adult debut, Proxy, made a strong first impression. It imagines a future where poor kids take the punishments meant for rich ones, then turns that setup into a fast chase story with class anger, friendship, and real feeling. Its sequel, Guardian, keeps the tension high by asking what happens after a revolution, when surviving the system is no longer enough and someone has to try to change it.

He writes fantasy with the same pressure and momentum. Black Wings Beating, followed by Red Skies Falling and Gold Wings Rising, drops readers into a world of falconers, war, court politics, and ghost eagles. The worldbuilding matters, but what many readers latch onto is the sibling relationship at the center, bruised, loving, and never simple.

He can shift gears fast.

For middle grade readers, London has built very different kinds of adventures. The Battle Dragons books mix dragons, gangs, races, and family secrets in a neon city. The Princess Protection Program flips fairy tales inside out and asks what happens when princesses refuse the endings picked for them. In Search and Rescue, he turns the attack on the Pentagon into a tense survival story told partly through the eyes of a young rescue dog. Across age groups and genres, he keeps returning to kids who have to think fast, choose for themselves, and keep going when the world gets scary.

Those patterns show up in his books for adults too, including Far From Zion and One Day The Soldiers Came. He writes full time now and lives in Philadelphia with his husband, daughter, and hound dog. The settings change, the genres change, and the age range changes, but the through line is pretty clear. He likes stories with motion, pressure, and people trying to find a decent way through danger.
