Author bio

Barbara D'Amato was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on April 10, 1938. She became a Chicago writer in the fullest sense, building mysteries around the city's streets, institutions, cops, reporters, and hard choices.

Before she wrote fiction full time, D'Amato had an unusually wide range of jobs. She worked as an assistant surgical orderly, researched criminal cases for attorneys, managed stages, built props for magic shows, and even assisted with tiger handling. Those experiences gave her a practical interest in how people work under pressure.

She began writing full time in 1973, first collaborating with her husband, Anthony D'Amato, on plays and musical comedies. Their work included The Magic Man, The Magic of Young Houdini, and RSVP Broadway, which were staged in Chicago and London.

Then she turned to crime.

Her first mysteries introduced forensic pathologist Gerritt De Graaf in The Hands of Healing Murder and The Eyes on Utopia Murders. They are classic puzzle stories, built around suspicious deaths, medical detail, and the question of how an apparently impossible crime could have happened.

D'Amato's best-known recurring character is Cat Marsala, the freelance Chicago reporter at the center of Hardball, Hard Tack, Hard Luck, and later novels. Cat follows stories into places that look ordinary at first, including a yacht, a trauma center, a Christmas-tree farm, and the state lottery. The books pair a reporter's curiosity with the risks of getting too close to people who have something to hide.

Her police novels shift the view to officers Suze Figueroa and Norm Bennis. Starting with Killer.App, these books bring technology, departmental politics, family life, and street-level police work into the same frame. Authorized Personnel Only, in which danger enters Suze's own home, received the Mary Higgins Clark Award.

Real cases mattered to D'Amato too. Her nonfiction book The Doctor, the Murder, the Mystery examined the conviction of Chicago physician Dr. John Branion for his wife's murder. The book earned Anthony and Agatha awards for true crime and nonfiction, and it reflects the same close attention to evidence that runs through her novels.

She also wrote standalones, including the adoption thriller White Male Infant, the international archaeological thriller Other Eyes, and Foolproof, written with Jeanne M. Dams and Mark Richard Zubro. Her short story "Of Course You Know That Chocolate Is a Vegetable" won Agatha, Anthony, and Macavity awards.

Chicago remains the common thread. D'Amato has lived there for many years, served as president of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime International, and brought a researcher's eye to crime fiction without losing the human stakes.
