Author bio
Barbara Bretton was born in New York City on June 25, 1950, and grew up in and around the city. She was a reader early, and she was the kind of future writer who paid close attention to people, family dynamics, and the little details that make everyday life feel vivid on the page.
Before writing novels full time, she worked as a computer programmer on Long Island. That mix, practical day job and creative ambition on the side, says a lot about her fiction. Her books may have romance at the center, but they are usually grounded in work, money worries, family pressure, and the messy business of figuring out how to build a life.
A major turning point came in her late twenties, after a serious illness pushed her to take writing more seriously. She sold her first novel in 1982, and Love Changes was published in 1983. From there she built a long career in romance, first in category fiction and then across a wider range of contemporary, historical, and paranormal stories.
She has range.
If you start with the Crosse Harbor time-travel books, including Somewhere in Time and Tomorrow and Always, you get Bretton in a more sweeping, high-concept mode. Those novels mix romance with history and the pull between past and present. If you pick up Sleeping Alone, Shore Lights, or A Soft Place to Fall, you see something else she does very well, emotionally bruised people trying to start over in small towns, coastal communities, and family circles that remember everything.
Then there is Casting Spells, which opened her Sugar Maple series and brought knitting, magic, murder, and romance together in one very Barbara Bretton package. That series, along with later books like Laced with Magic and Spun By Sorcery, shows how easily she can shift from straight contemporary romance into a warmer, quirky paranormal world without losing the emotional core.
Across her work, certain things come up again and again. Second chances. Complicated mothers and daughters. Strong community ties. Holiday settings. Women rebuilding after disappointment. Men who are not always easy to trust, but worth the effort when they finally show who they are. Even when the setup includes witches, time travel, or a disappearing town, the feelings underneath are recognizably human.
Her success is easy to measure in plain facts. She has written more than 40 books, sold millions of copies, and seen her work translated widely. She has also won multiple career and reviewers' awards in romance, which fits a career built over decades rather than in one sudden burst.
She lives in New Jersey and has long spent time in Maine with her husband.
That feels right for her books. They often read like they were written by someone who understands shore towns, weather, family history, and the comfort of going home, even when home is the very place that broke your heart the first time.
