Series background & context

The Aven Cycle is a Roman-inspired fantasy series set in a republic where politics, warfare, faith, and elemental magic shape everyday life. It begins after the death of Aven's Dictator, when senators, generals, and mages all see an opening to influence the city's future. The old order is gone, but nobody agrees on what should replace it.

At the heart of the series is Latona of the Vitelliae. Latona is a mage blessed with Spirit and Fire, yet she has spent much of her life suppressing abilities that could attract dangerous attention. As Aven changes around her, she has to decide whether she can use that power openly and become a protector of the people.

Her family is a major part of the story. Latona's sisters and brother have their own strengths, duties, and political pressures, and their relationships give the series much of its emotional center. The books also follow Sempronius Tarren, a senator with serious ambitions and a secret: he is a Shadow mage, even though sacred law bars mages from holding high office.

Aven's magic is not tucked away in a distant corner of the world. People are blessed in different elemental traditions, and those gifts affect work, religion, reputation, and who gets access to power. Some magic is subtle and useful in daily life. Some is strong enough to change the fate of a city.

From Unseen Fire introduces Aven at a fragile political moment, with Latona and Sempronius drawn into a struggle over the republic's future. Give Way to Night expands the story through unrest in the city and war in the provinces, separating key characters while keeping their choices connected. The Bloodstained Shade brings the danger home as Aven faces a threat aimed at its political and spiritual foundations.

Expect high-stakes fantasy with Senate debates, military campaigns, illicit magic, family loyalty, and a romance shaped by public duty. The tone is tense without losing sight of friendship, humor, and the ordinary people caught in larger conflicts. Start with From Unseen Fire, since each book builds on the events and relationships of the one before it.
