Audrey Niffenegger Books in Order

Audrey Niffenegger was born in South Haven, Michigan, and grew up in Evanston, Illinois. She has spent most of her life in or near Chicago, and that city shows up again and again in her work, not as scenery, but as a lived-in place of libraries, apartments, trains, and ordinary people dealing with very strange things.

She came to writing through art. As a teenager she began making prints, and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago she built a path through etching, letterpress, and bookbinding. She later earned an MFA from Northwestern University in art theory and practice, which helps explain why even her novels feel carefully made, almost constructed by hand.

That visual side never went away.

Before she was widely known as a novelist, Niffenegger was making limited-edition artist's books in tiny runs, often hand printed and bound. Two of those early works, The Adventuress and The Three Incestuous Sisters, later reached a broader audience in trade editions. They already contain many of her favorite things: fairy-tale logic, bodies that change shape, intense women, dark jokes, and stories that move like dreams.

Her turn toward prose came from a practical problem. In 1997 she began work on what became The Time Traveler's Wife, and at first she imagined it as a graphic novel. Then she realized that sudden jumps through time were hard to show with still images alone, so she shifted into prose and kept going. Published in 2003, the book became an international bestseller and later a film. Readers who love it tend to talk about the same mix of things: the high-concept time travel, the very grounded marriage at the center, and the way a wild premise is made to feel intimate and sad and funny all at once.

Then she went from time travel to ghosts.

Her second novel, Her Fearful Symmetry, moves to London and the shadow of Highgate Cemetery, where identical twins, family secrets, and a literal haunting create a colder, stranger kind of story. If The Time Traveler's Wife is her big crossover novel, Her Fearful Symmetry shows how much she likes doubles, absences, and the uneasy border between the living and the dead. The same interests run through her illustrated work too. The Night Bookmobile is a lovely, unsettling story about a woman who finds a mobile library containing every book she has ever read, and Raven Girl, created in collaboration with choreographer Wayne McGregor for the Royal Opera House, turns longing and transformation into a dark fairy tale.

She has always moved back and forth between words and images.

That rhythm also shaped her working life. Niffenegger helped found the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts and taught book arts and creative writing for years. In 2013 the National Museum of Women in the Arts mounted a major retrospective of her visual work, Awake in the Dream World, which brought together prints, drawings, paintings, and bookworks. Later, in 2018, she and her husband, artist and writer Eddie Campbell, published Bizarre Romance, a playful and creepy collection of illustrated stories about love in all its odd forms.

What ties her books together is easy to spot once you see it. She likes bookish people, sisters, artists, ghosts, time slips, doubles, and characters who are partly in the everyday world and partly somewhere stranger. Memory matters. Waiting matters. So do libraries, old buildings, paper, and the fragile ways people try to hold on to each other.

She lives in Chicago and spends time in London, and she remains as much a visual storyteller as a novelist. That mix is a big part of her appeal. Her stories can be romantic, eerie, and melancholy, but they are also handmade in spirit, as if every page remembers that its author once learned to build books from the inside out.
