Author bio

Audrey J. Cole grew up near Seattle, and that part of the Pacific Northwest still shows up all over her fiction. Seattle streets, Puget Sound, small planes, ferries, and remote stretches of Alaska are not just scenery in her books. They are part of the pressure.

She spent years in a very different job before writing full time. Cole worked as a neonatal intensive care nurse for eleven years, and that medical background gives her thrillers a grounded feel, especially when her plots move into hospitals, trauma, or the uneasy overlap between medicine and crime.

Her route into fiction started with one sharp news item. She has said that a story about a death row inmate who wanted to donate his organs after execution sparked the idea for The Recipient, her debut novel. That first book set the tone for a lot of what followed: fast pacing, unsettling medical angles, and ordinary lives pushed into frightening situations.

She likes to keep the story moving.

The Emerald City books, including The Recipient, Inspired by Murder, Viable Hostage, and Fatal Deception, are set around Seattle and follow cases tied to detectives, doctors, students, and damaged families. Readers who enjoy crime fiction with medical detail tend to click with these novels because the procedural side never fully takes over. The danger stays personal.

Her standalones widen the range. The Pilot's Daughter turns a flight from Seattle to Honolulu into a hijacking thriller. Only One Lie shifts back to 1942 Seattle for a wartime kidnapping mystery centered on a young pilot. The One leans into marriage, betrayal, and wealthy Seattle power players. Then The Trip takes old friends out to sea and turns a luxury sailing getaway into a closed-circle nightmare.

Planes show up a lot, and not by accident.

Cole is, by her own account, a pilot's daughter, and that detail threads through several books, especially The Pilot's Daughter, Missing In Flight, and Final Descent. Her thrillers often put capable women in tight corners: a nurse on a hijacked plane, a mother whose baby vanishes mid-flight, a pilot being stalked by a man who may or may not be real. Even when the hook is high concept, the fear usually comes from something close to home.

She has also talked about growing up on Nancy Drew and later reading a lot of true crime, especially stories set in the Pacific Northwest. That mix makes sense once you read her work. There is a page-turner energy to the plotting, but also a steady interest in clues, motive, and the small choices that push ordinary lives into crisis.

For a period she lived in Australia, then moved back to Washington. She writes under her maiden name, Audrey J. Cole. Cole is a USA Today bestselling thriller writer, and her books have been translated into multiple languages. She now lives in the Pacific Northwest with her two children.

What readers usually get from an Audrey J. Cole novel is pretty clear: a fast start, a strong central woman, and a situation that keeps tightening. Whether she is writing cops in Seattle, survivors in Alaska, or mothers trapped on airplanes, she has a knack for dropping one bad thing into an ordinary life and following the fallout all the way through.
