Assured (Nicholas Rhea) Books in Order

The Assured books show Nicholas Rhea in a lighter, more domestic mode. Matthew Taylor has left his old work as a butcher and taken a job selling insurance around the rural district of Delverdale. He expects paperwork, premiums, and long days on the road. What he gets is a front-row seat to everybody else's problems.

Insurance is only the excuse.

Matthew's rounds take him through farms, cottages, villages, and isolated houses where a simple business call can turn into a request for help, an argument to untangle, a strange claim to investigate, or an encounter with a client who has a very unusual idea of what needs covering. The work puts him in touch with every kind of local character, and few of them make his day straightforward.

The books are set in the 1950s, and their pace suits the period. They are built from conversations, mishaps, practical difficulties, and the gentle absurdity of trying to make a living where reputation matters and news travels fast. Matthew is not a detective, yet he often ends up noticing more than he intended, simply because people talk to him and trust him with their worries.

Evelyn, Matthew's wife, is an important part of the series. Their marriage, home life, money concerns, and shared effort to keep things going give the stories a solid centre. When work becomes difficult, or when Matthew is laid up and needs help, the domestic side of the books matters just as much as the latest odd client or unexpected incident.

Rhea gets plenty of comedy from the business of insurance. A policy can raise more questions than it answers. A customer may want to pay in an inconvenient way. An everyday accident may become a full-scale village drama. But the humour is usually affectionate rather than cruel, and the books also catch the pressures of ordinary postwar life.

Matthew keeps turning up where something is happening.

Readers who like the community feel of the Constable novels will recognise the appeal, even without a police officer at the centre.
