Author bio
Peter N Walker was born in 1936 in Glaisdale on the North York Moors, and that landscape never really left him. He grew up in a family with one foot in practical work and one in books, the oldest of three children born to an insurance agent and a teacher. He won a scholarship to Whitby Grammar School, but left at sixteen, already pulled between earning a living and the idea that he might one day write for one.
He wanted to be a writer early.
Before the books, there was the police force. After leaving school he applied to the local paper and was turned down, then became a police cadet and later joined the North Riding force full time in 1956. He kept writing in his spare hours, though, and by the age of twenty he had placed a short story in Police Review. He also wrote a long run of unpublished novels before somebody gave him the plainest advice possible: write about what you know.
That changed things. His first published novel, Carnaby and the Hijackers, appeared in 1967, and it opened the door to a long career that ran across crime fiction, rural memoir, local history, and television tie-ins. Over the years he published under several names, including Christopher Coram, James Ferguson, and most famously Nicholas Rhea.
His best-known work came from going back to the world he understood best. In Constable on the Hill and the many books that followed, Walker turned his memories of village policing in 1960s Yorkshire into warm, funny, sharp-eyed stories about Constable Nick and the people of Aidensfield. Readers came for the small mysteries and local colour, but also for the feeling that every odd neighbour, stubborn farmer, and village rogue had been noticed properly. Those books later inspired the television series Heartbeat, and Walker also worked as a police consultant on the show.
He was never just one kind of writer.
If you only know the Constable books, the range can be a surprise. The Mark Pemberton novels, including False Alibi, Grave Secrets, and The Sniper, are darker and more procedural. The Montague Pluke books lean into superstition, folklore, and eccentric detection. The Assured novels step away from the police station altogether and follow an insurance man making his rounds through rural Yorkshire. Even when the tone shifts, the same things keep turning up: working lives, close communities, hidden grudges, weather, landscape, and a strong feel for how people actually talk.
Walker rose through the police ranks to inspector and later served as press officer for North Yorkshire Police. He retired from the force in 1982 so he could write full time, by which point he already had a substantial body of work behind him. He stayed busy for decades, producing fiction, factual books about Yorkshire, and newspaper columns, while remaining closely tied to the countryside that shaped him.
Recognition came in a steady, grounded way. He was active in the Crime Writers' Association and received its John Creasey Award for services to the association in 2007. In 2008 he was given a lifetime achievement award at the Yorkshire Rural Awards. Those honours fit the shape of his career, long, hardworking, local in the best sense, and built book by book.
He was married to Rhoda and had four children. Peter N Walker died in York on April 21, 2017. By then he had written well over a hundred books, but the real thread through them all was simple: Yorkshire, work, people, and stories worth passing on.
