Assured Books in Order

The Assured books move away from police work, but not away from the world Peter N Walker knew best. Instead of a constable on patrol, the series gives us Matthew Taylor, an ex-butcher who takes a job as a local insurance agent in rural Delverdale in the 1950s. That sounds like a quiet career change, and Walker has a lot of fun proving that it is anything but quiet.

Matthew quickly learns that selling insurance across scattered farms and moorland villages means stepping into everybody else's business.

That is the engine of the series. Matthew is supposed to be collecting premiums, signing policies, and building up his round. In practice he is forever being pulled into practical emergencies, odd requests, domestic tangles, village gossip, and the sort of everyday crises that never make the headlines but can take over a whole day. Because the people he serves trust him, or at least get used to him, he becomes part salesman, part listener, part fixer, and part witness to the comic side of country life.

His family matters too. Evelyn, his wife, is not background decoration, and their home life gives the books warmth and shape. Money worries, household plans, injuries, work pressures, and the effort of getting on with ordinary life all help ground the stories. These are not thrillers. They are affectionate rural novels built from incidents, characters, and the small absurdities of earning a living in places where everybody knows everybody.

Walker also gets a lot of mileage from the job itself. Insurance can sound dry, but in these books it becomes a perfect excuse to visit every corner of the district. One client wants cover for something ridiculous. Another wants to pay in kind. Someone else is hiding a bigger problem under a practical question. Matthew is always one call away from another surprise.

The tone is easygoing, but not empty. Beneath the humour there is a real picture of postwar rural life, the importance of reputation, the strain of money, and the mix of independence and neighbourliness that keeps a community going.

If you like the gentler side of Walker's writing, the Assured books are a lovely fit. They keep his ear for Yorkshire voices and his eye for odd local characters, while giving him a fresh lead character and a job that opens doors all over the moors.
