Author bio
Ashley Gardner is one of the names Jennifer Ashley writes under, and it fits the part of her work that loves murder, history, and the strange corners of the past. She was born in Chicago, but she has said she barely remembers it because her family moved when she was about eighteen months old. Her father was first a minister and then an Air Force chaplain, so home kept changing.
Moving was her normal.
That kind of childhood had its hard parts, but it also gave her a wide view of the world. She grew up in different places, lived overseas, and spent time in Japan, which she still remembers vividly. All that travel shows up in her books. Even when she writes about London drawing rooms or Ancient Rome, there is usually a strong sense that places shape people.
She has said she started writing when she was very young, first with horse stories, then with fantasy once she discovered writers like Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. In college she kept at it, and after earning a master's degree in English literature and taking a regular job, she decided to stop treating publication like a daydream. She sold the first short story she ever submitted, which gave her the misleading idea that publishing might be easy. It was not. More submissions, more waiting, and more rejection followed before the longer career took hold.
When the novels started landing, the range was already there. She writes historical, paranormal, and contemporary romance as Jennifer Ashley, mysteries as Ashley Gardner, and paranormal romance and urban fantasy as Allyson James. The mystery side took off with Captain Gabriel Lacey. The Hanover Square Affair introduced a wounded cavalry officer trying to make sense of civilian life in Regency London, and readers kept following him.
Those books show what Gardner does well. The Sudbury School Murders mixes a tight mystery with the grime and class tension of Regency England, while Blood of a Gladiator moves the same love of research to Nero's Rome. Under the Jennifer Ashley name, Death Below Stairs shifts to Victorian London and follows cook Kat Holloway through murder, gossip, and kitchen politics. Different eras, same pleasure: capable people, strong atmosphere, and trouble that starts small and turns serious fast.
She likes putting smart people under pressure.
Across her work, certain things come up again and again. She is interested in outsiders, in people who know how systems work because the systems were never built for them. Former soldiers, cooks, servants, freedmen, actresses, and women navigating rigid social rules all get center stage. She also pays attention to work. Her characters cook, ride, bargain, investigate, build, and improvise, which makes the history feel lived in instead of decorative.
These days she lives in the American Southwest and has written more than 120 novels and novellas. When she is not working, she still sounds like someone who genuinely enjoys making things. She travels, cooks, plays guitar, hikes, builds miniature room settings, and drinks gourmet tea. That mix of curiosity and craft feels a lot like the books themselves.
