Author bio
Lisa Gardner grew up in Hillsboro, Oregon, where she devoured mystery novels long before she ever tried to write one. In college she drafted her first romantic suspense story, squeezing in pages between classes and part time jobs.
To pay the bills after graduation she worked long hours as a research analyst in Boston. That job, built on digging into data and asking follow up questions, quietly trained her to think like an investigator. At night and on weekends she returned to the page, revising the manuscript that would become her debut novel.
Those early books appeared under the pseudonym Alicia Scott. Titles like Walking After Midnight introduced readers to her blend of high emotion, wounded characters, and looming danger. Writing category romance taught her how to build tension quickly, sketch people in a few efficient strokes, and land an ending that feels earned.
Everything shifted with The Perfect Husband, her breakout thriller about a woman hunted by the serial killer she once married. The book launched the FBI Profiler series and marked her move from category romance into full length crime fiction. From there she created Boston homicide detective D.D. Warren, state trooper turned investigator Tessa Leoni, and later missing persons searcher Frankie Elkin, widening her fictional world with each new series.
Gardner is a self described research junkie. She has spent time with police detectives, FBI agents, medical examiners, prison staff, and search and rescue experts to understand how investigations really work. That background shows up in books like The Third Victim, Live to Tell, and Say Goodbye, where small procedural details sit alongside intensely personal stakes.
Her novels have collected a steady trail of milestones rather than a single lightning strike. The Neighbor won major thriller awards on both sides of the Atlantic, The Other Daughter earned a well known suspense prize, and several books have been adapted for television, including At the Midnight Hour, The Survivors Club, and Hide.
Gardner’s stories often circle the same concerns from different angles: families under pressure, children in jeopardy, the long shadow of trauma, and the question of how far an ordinary person will go to protect someone they love. She is known for centering complicated women, from hard edged detectives to exhausted mothers and survivors who refuse to stay victims.
She also has a playful side. Each year she runs a tongue in cheek contest that lets readers volunteer a name to be used for a victim or character in an upcoming book, a tradition that keeps the distance between writer and fans pleasantly small.
Today Gardner lives in New Hampshire, where she writes surrounded by energetic dogs and plenty of snow. When she is not working on a manuscript, she is likely to be hiking, snowshoeing, gardening, or playing cribbage, recharging before she sends D.D. Warren, Pierce Quincy, Frankie Elkin, or some new protagonist back into harm’s way.
