Kradak the Champion

by Shawn Inmon

2021

Steve is a big, amiable actor who plays barbarian hero Kradak in cheesy movies. When warriors from the world of Arkana kidnap him, believing the legend is real, he has to become the champion he only ever pretended to be to save two worlds.

Series background & context

The Arkana stories are Shawn Inmon’s playful take on classic sword-and-sorcery adventure. Instead of starting with a chosen one born to wield a magic blade, the series opens with Steve, a big, good-natured actor who makes his living pretending to be a barbarian hero named Kradak in a string of low-budget movies.

Rista and Grint, warriors from the fantasy world of Arkana, do not understand what a movie is. When they see Steve on a screen, swinging a sword and saving the day, they assume he really is Kradak the Champion. Desperate for help against a gathering darkness in their own land, they cross a portal into our world, kidnap him, and drag him back through before anyone can explain the misunderstanding.

Once the portal closes, Steve is stuck. Arkana is no film set. The monsters are real, the wounds hurt, and the fate of entire kingdoms hangs in the balance. In Kradak the Champion, he stumbles his way into the role everyone expects him to fill, helped and occasionally mocked by Rista, a deadly swordswoman with little patience for his city‑boy habits, and Grint, a sarcastic shape‑shifting goblin.

The books lean into both the fun and the danger of that setup. There are towering beasts, magic swords, and looming villains, but also the comedy of a modern actor trying to live up to his own exaggerated screen persona. Steve’s growth from pretending to be a hero to actually becoming one gives the series a solid emotional throughline beneath the banter.

By the time Kradak the Unbeatable arrives, the stakes have risen. Steve and his companions carry Lumina, the most powerful sword in Arkana, but it exacts a toll, slowly draining his life even as it helps them. Their quest to confront Mikol, bringer of darkness, forces them to bargain with dragons, cross dangerous landscapes, and decide how much they are willing to sacrifice for a world that was never really theirs.

Arkana reads like a love letter to old-school fantasy, but with a modern wink. It offers fast-moving plots, vivid battles, and a tight trio of leads whose clashing personalities keep things lively even between fights. Because there are only two main novels so far, it is easy for new readers to jump in at the beginning, follow the full arc, and enjoy a complete, high-energy adventure.
