Author bio

Annette Marie is a Canadian fantasy author with more than thirty books to her name, and her stories tend to move the way good urban fantasy should, fast, sharp, funny, and a little dangerous. She lives in Alberta, Canada, with her husband and their cat, Caesar, and she writes the kind of fantasy that makes room for both big magic and messy feelings.

Fantasy is clearly her home turf. On her author site, she describes it as her first love, with fast-paced adventure and forbidden romance close behind. That combination runs through almost everything she writes, whether the story is built around demons, fae, gods, or a bartender who accidentally gets a job in a magic guild.

Her debut series, Steel & Stone, began in 2014 and introduced readers to Piper Griffiths, daemons, underworld politics, and a conflict that keeps getting bigger the more Piper learns. Marie later expanded that same world with the Spell Weaver trilogy, which follows Clio and Lyre through dangerous realms, forbidden magic, and a romance shaped by bad odds and worse timing.

Then came Red Winter.

That trilogy takes a different path, leaning into Japanese mythology and following Emi, a shrine maiden caught between duty, gods, yokai, and the slow collapse of everything she thought she understood. Readers who pick it up for the romance often stay for the atmosphere, the spirit world stakes, and the way the series keeps asking who gets to decide a person's fate.

Her biggest sandbox is The Guild Codex, a web of interconnected urban fantasy series that includes Spellbound, Demonized, Warped, and Unveiled. One branch gives you Tori, a human bartender working in a magic guild. Another follows Robin Page, a bookish sorceress tied to an illegal demon contract. Another hands the mic to Kit Morris, a psychic conman who keeps stumbling into magical law enforcement. Together, the books build a shared world that feels broad without losing the fun of each individual storyline.

Because she writes independently, Marie has had room to build her worlds sideways as well as forward. The Guild Codex is not just one long sequence, but a network of linked series that overlap, echo, and occasionally collide. That structure lets readers choose the tone they want, funny found-family chaos, slower demon romance, fae-heavy mystery, or trickster-flavored investigations, while still getting the payoff of a bigger universe.

That kind of worldbuilding is half the fun.

A lot of Marie's appeal comes down to voice and character. Some readers start with Three Mages and a Margarita for the banter and guild-life energy. Others go straight to Taming Demons for Beginners for the quieter slow burn between Robin and Zylas. Others want the darker emotional pull of The One and Only Crystal Druid. Across all of them, she likes capable heroines, morally tangled allies, found family, and magic that always comes with a cost.

When she is not writing, Marie says she is usually elbow-deep in an art project and happily ignoring adult responsibilities. That small detail fits. Her books have a handmade, personal feel, energetic worlds, high stakes, and characters who are rarely neat, but are almost always worth following.
