Anna Lee Mystery Books in Order

Anna Lee is a former police officer who now works as a private investigator in London, usually for the not especially glamorous Brierly Security. She starts out low in the office pecking order, stuck with the jobs nobody values, but the series quickly shows why she matters. Anna is sharp, patient, and better at reading a room than the men around her realize. Each book gives her a case that looks limited at first and then widens into something uglier.

These are very grounded private-eye novels. Anna moves through cold flats, shabby offices, side streets, pubs, film circles, rehearsal rooms, hotels, and suburban homes, following the money, the damage, and the lies. London matters here. Its class lines, cramped workplaces, and everyday sexism shape the stories as much as the clues do. Even when the books pull Anna out of the city, that same pressure stays with her.

Anna is not a glamorous detective, and that is a big part of the appeal. She gets tired, misjudges people, and sometimes has to work for clients who are vain, frightened, or impossible. What makes her so readable is that she keeps going anyway. She listens carefully, notices what others brush past, and understands how small humiliations can turn into real danger. The plots range from suspicious deaths and missing people to threats against a rising pop star, but the real draw is always Anna doing the work.

There is also a steady thread of workplace irritation running through the books. Anna has to deal with a boss who does not always value her, police who can be dismissive, and men who assume she will back off when things get messy. She rarely does. Her private life flickers in and out, but the series never loses sight of the job, the risk, and the cost of trying to keep your self-respect in bad conditions.

The six books, from Dupe to Backhand, also show Anna growing more experienced and more certain of herself. She becomes tougher, more independent, and less willing to accept the limits other people set for her. The series helped open space for a professional female private detective in British crime fiction, and it was later adapted for television. On the page, though, the lasting pleasure is Anna herself: observant, stubborn, dryly funny, and always more human than heroic.

If you like private-eye fiction where the detective has to earn every break, this series is a very good fit. It is best read in order, because part of the fun is watching Anna find her footing, widen her world, and refuse to stay in the box other people built for her.
