Author bio
Anna Katmore is an Austrian author who spent much of her childhood in Vienna after her family moved there when she was four. She has written about never really loving city life as a kid and later heading back to the countryside, which feels like a neat clue to the two big moods in her fiction: modern teen life on one side, and a steady pull toward magic on the other.
Stories showed up early for her.
By her own telling, she was the child who kept seeing whole adventures and wanted everyone else to see them too. In kindergarten, a teacher called her a liar. Katmore has since looked back on that moment as one of the first signs of the imagination that would shape her writing life. She has also said that writing was not always the obvious career path. For a long time, it was private, a habit, a comfort, and a way to deal with that nagging feeling that the world could use a little more wonder.
That private habit turned serious once she began finishing books. She has written that she could barely imagine sharing her first manuscript, and only got used to the idea while working on her second. Then Play With Me, her debut novella, arrived in 2012 and took off quickly enough to change how she saw her future. She has described that early success as the moment she realized she could keep dreaming bigger, even when other people warned her not to count on writing for a living.
She clearly did not stay in one lane.
Katmore moves easily between contemporary romance and light fantasy. Readers who meet her through Play With Me or Ryan Hunter usually remember the banter, the sports backdrop, and the very immediate high school feelings. Readers who start with Neverland get something else, a Peter Pan retelling with a romantic streak and a Captain Hook who is far more than a stock villain. Then there are books like My Secret Vampire and Julian, where paranormal ideas come in, but the emotional core stays front and center.
She also likes taking familiar story shapes and bending them just enough to make them feel new. A Prince for Little Red Riding Hood plays with fairy-tale rules and laughs at them. The Impossible Bet leans into dares, chemistry, and comic timing. Even in her more intense work, like the Crushed Hearts books, the focus stays close to the characters: what they want, what scares them, and how long they can keep pretending they are in control. First love, longing, misread signals, and the hope of a happy ending run through almost everything she writes.
These days, Katmore presents herself not just as a novelist but as someone openly interested in spirituality as well. She has spoken about teaching writing and spiritual workshops, and that mix, story craft plus inner life, shows up all over her author presence. It also helps explain why her books can jump from soccer fields to pirate ships to castles in Transylvania without seeming to lose their center. She likes romance, fantasy, Disney, dragons, and a little wonder in everyday life. That feels like the through line.
