Earthside

by Dennis E Taylor

2023

In the aftermath of the Yellowstone super-eruption, the Outland colony of Rivendell is overcrowded, hungry, and deeply divided. As scouts answer a garbled distress call from ruined Omaha, new refugees and old grudges threaten to tear the fragile off-world settlement apart.

Outland

by Dennis E Taylor

2015

When a quantum physics experiment opens a portal to an untouched twin of Earth, a group of college friends see it as a shortcut to fame and fortune. Then Yellowstone erupts, and their secret project becomes a frantic, improvised lifeboat for refugees fleeing a collapsing civilization.

Series background & context

The Quantum Earth series imagines what happens when a handful of smart but unprepared students punch a hole between realities. In Outland, a physics experiment meant to probe quantum uncertainty accidentally opens a portal from our Earth to a twin world with the same geology, no people, and a lot of Pleistocene wildlife.

At first, the group treats their discovery like a grad-school startup. Bill, Kevin, and their friends quietly move the equipment off campus, experiment with new destinations, and use the empty world they nickname Outland as a place to stockpile supplies and pan for gold. They are thinking about patents, not planetary rescue plans.

That changes when sensors around Yellowstone start screaming. A super-eruption buries much of North America in ash and kicks off a global collapse. With only hours to react, the students turn their side project into an escape route, pushing as many people as they can through to Outland before the ash cloud makes even short trips Earthside deadly.

Life on the other side is not a simple paradise. The new community at Rivendell has to improvise housing, food production, medicine, and security in a landscape filled with mastodons, dire wolves, and sabertooth cats. Old-world assumptions about property, politics, and who gets a say in decisions do not survive first contact with hunger and cold.

Earth is still out there, though, and Earthside picks up the story as Rivendell grows and frays. The population keeps rising, winter is closing in, and different factions want very different futures for the colony. Bill and Kevin push the portal technology toward new worlds while scavenger teams cross back to a ruined Nebraska and a half-frozen Omaha in search of parts, medicine, and more survivors.

When a desperate call for help pulls most of the trained fighters back to the ash-choked cities, Rivendell is left underprotected just as a large, organized group of refugees arrives with its own leaders and agenda. The books explore how fragile a young society can be when outside threats, clashing values, and raw fear all hit at once.

Compared with the Bobiverse, Quantum Earth stays closer to the ground. The focus is on logistics, community building, and the ethics of deciding who gets saved when resources are limited. Readers get the same mix of clear science, wry humor, and problem-solving optimism, but filtered through volcanic ash, parallel worlds, and the kind of messy politics any frontier tends to attract.
