Annie Nicholas's Angler series is the darker, more suspenseful side of her romance writing. The books begin with Connie Bence, a slayer who is used as live bait to draw vampires out of hiding. That premise alone tells you a lot about the mood. These stories are built on danger, mistrust, and the fact that getting close to the wrong person can get you killed.

In Bait, Connie is sent to Budapest to help trap Rurik, a vampire overlord she has every reason to fear. Instead, she ends up inside vampire society and starts to question the story she has been told. Catch pushes things further by moving Connie into Rio and deeper into court politics, blood bonds, and the ugly truth that love does not get simpler when another vampire enters the picture. Release keeps the pressure on as Rurik changes in alarming ways and Connie is forced into a brutal race to save him.

That first stretch gives the series its spine. Connie is not a passive heroine, and the books do not treat the vampire world as simple fantasy glamour. Nicholas makes it political, secretive, and often vicious. There are kings, overlords, clan rules, and old powers that sit above ordinary monsters. A romance can bloom there, but it is always tangled up with duty, hunger, and survival.

Later books widen the lens. Hunting Colby follows Gwen and Colby, bringing wolf shifters and slayer business into the same tense world. Vampire Fugitive shifts toward the next generation through Maggie Bence, who is suddenly running for her life with a bounty on her head. Vampire Hook returns to Connie's orbit after years of change, showing what happens when a hard-won home is threatened again.

One of the best things about Angler is its sense of movement. These books do not stay in one city or one mood. Budapest, Rio, New York, Europe, and island life all matter because the vampire network is international. Characters are always crossing borders, following prey, dodging enemies, or landing in a court where the rules changed before they arrived.

The tone is still romantic, but this is not the warmest place to start if you want cozy supernatural fun. Angler leans more urban fantasy and romantic thriller. The stakes are higher, the blood politics are meaner, and the emotional wins have to be fought for.

If that sounds appealing, this series is where Nicholas lets her vampires be dangerous, seductive, and deeply inconvenient. Connie's world is messy from page one, and that is exactly why the books work.
