Turns of Fate

by Anne Bishop

2025

Detective Beth Fahey is sent to Destiny Park on the Isle of Wyrd to investigate a so called ghost gun and finds a place where words shape reality. As desperate visitors bargain with the Arcana to rewrite their lives, Beth learns that every change of fate has a price.

Series background & context

An Isle of Wyrd is Bishop's newest setting, a strange island just across the river from ordinary human towns. At its heart is Destiny Park, a place that looks at first glance like a slightly old fashioned amusement park with gardens, a hotel, and card readers. Behind the scenes, the island is ruled by the Arcana, paranormal beings who can see into the patterns of someone's life and, for a price, change the path that person is on.

In Turns of Fate, the first Isle of Wyrd novel, most people come to Destiny Park for harmless reasons. They want a reading, a good meal, or the thrill of walking somewhere where human law does not apply. Others arrive in desperation or bad faith. Some are looking for a bargain to escape an abusive situation, some are greedy gamblers hoping to tilt the odds, and some simply do not believe that the Arcana are real until it is far too late.

The book threads several of those stories together. An author running from a violent fiancé, a pair of privileged brothers who treat everyone around them as disposable, a cluster of teenage bullies and the girl they torment, a professor obsessed with forbidden knowledge, and a police detective named Beth Fahey all cross the river. Each encounter with the Arcana reshapes not just their lives but also the island itself, because intention and wording matter as much as the sacrifice offered.

Beth's journey gives readers a human anchor. Sent to Destiny Park to look into a so called ghost gun, she expects a routine inquiry into scams or stagecraft. Instead she has to learn the park's unforgiving rules, navigate bargains she does not fully understand, and decide what she is willing to risk to uncover the truth about herself and the crimes she is investigating.

As in Bishop's other work, the magic here has sharp edges. Changing your fate might mean being carried away on a train full of the dead, being transformed into something less or more human, or waking up in a landscape that matches the worst or best parts of your heart. The Arcana are not evil, but they are not kind in a human way, and the island has little patience for cruelty, cowardice, or careless promises.

An Isle of Wyrd so far reads like a dark, atmospheric fantasy that mixes mystery, folklore, and moral fable. It will likely grow as more novels appear, but even from the first book you can see familiar Bishop signatures: tight rules around supernatural bargains, found family among outcasts, and the question of how much of yourself you are willing to risk for a different future.
