Series background & context

The Ephemera books take place in a world that quite literally reacts to the human heart. Long ago the land shattered into many small landscapes, each shaped by the dominant emotions of the people who live there. Bridges slip between those pieces, sometimes carrying travelers where they most need to go rather than where they intended.

The first novel, Sebastian, introduces the incubus Sebastian and the den he runs, a demon filled pleasure landscape meant as a refuge for people who cannot fit anywhere else. Sebastian is tired of being seen only as a seducer and wants a real home. When he dreams of a frightened woman who longs to be safe, and Lynnea falls into his world, the story becomes a mix of sensual romance, questions about desire and consent, and the unsettling hint that something far worse is waking in the cracks of Ephemera.

In Belladonna, the focus shifts to Sebastian's cousin Glorianna Belladonna, a powerful Landscaper who has already broken many of her order's rules. She is one of the few who can sense the Eater of the World, a devouring presence that feeds on fear and is slowly poisoning landscape after landscape. A wandering musician named Michael follows a recurring dream to find her, and together they have to decide how much they are willing to risk to stop a vast, almost impersonal evil.

Bridge of Dreams follows Glorianna's brother Lee after the events of the duology. When wizards attack the Bridges she has built, Lee sacrifices himself to save her work and wakes up blind and imprisoned in an asylum in the distant city of Vision. There he slowly recovers with the help of Danyal, a skeptical shaman, and Zhahar, a caretaker with her own complicated secrets, even as a new darkness creeps into the city around them.

The novella The Voice offers a smaller, unsettling story set on the outskirts of Ephemera. In a village where no one seems to feel grief or sorrow, a girl named Nalah grows up delivering cakes to a mute girl known only as the Voice whenever anyone is upset. As she matures and visits the Temple of Sorrow in Vision, she begins to understand what her community has been hiding and what it will cost to free herself.

Taken together, the Ephemera books are about how inner landscapes shape outer ones. You can expect lush settings, romantic subplots, and a steady interest in how people carry trauma, loneliness, and hope. The tone leans more introspective than action driven, with plenty of time spent on conversations, dreams, and the slow work of choosing who you want to be in a world that listens to your heart.
