Amy A Bartol was born in Michigan, and she still lives there today. She writes fantasy, paranormal romance, and science fiction stories that lean hard into danger, longing, and impossible choices.

She did not set out with a grand publishing plan.

As a child, books were a refuge. Bartol has said she grew up in a home marked by violence and alcoholism, and reading gave her a way to step into safer, bigger worlds. When a novel ended, she kept the story going in her head, imagining new adventures for favorite characters and refusing to let the world close up just because the last page had arrived.

That habit eventually turned into an experiment: she decided to see if she could write a book herself. The result was Inescapable, the first Premonition novel, which she rewrote again and again, by her own account around a hundred times, before self-publishing it in 2011. She has said she never expected many people to read it, which makes the path that followed feel a little like one of her own plot twists.

Bartol is a graduate of Hillsdale College, and that part of her life left a clear mark on her fiction. The campus helped inspire Crestwood College in the Premonition books, and she has said that the reading she did there shaped her as a writer. She has also noted that college pushed her toward books she might not have chosen on her own, which taught her something useful about range. Before writing became her full-time path, she worked as a preschool teacher, a youth counselor for underprivileged teens, an adult employment counselor, an office design project coordinator, and a full-time mom.

That mix of real life work and big imagination shows up all over her books.

Readers usually meet her through Inescapable, where Evie Claremont arrives at college and finds herself tangled up in angels, faeries, and a future she cannot quite outrun. Others start with Under Different Stars, which throws Kricket Hollowell from Chicago to the planet Ethar and blends prophecy, romance, and spacefaring adventure. Then there is Secondborn, a dystopian story set in the Fates Republic, where birth order decides your place in society and Roselle St. Sismode is pushed into a role she never wanted. If you keep going into Sea of Stars, Traitor Born, or Rebel Born, you can see how much she enjoys raising both the emotional stakes and the scale of the world.

Her recurring themes are pretty clear. Identity matters a lot in these books: who you are, who other people say you are, and what happens when those two things collide. She also returns again and again to fierce romantic tension, loyalty under pressure, family damage, hidden power, and the fight between fate and choice. She has pointed to writers such as Ray Bradbury and C.S. Lewis, along with fantasy favorites she loved growing up, as part of the imaginative background that fed her work. Even when the setting turns supernatural or futuristic, the emotions stay close to the skin.

After building a large audience as an indie author, Bartol signed with 47North in 2015 and kept expanding her reach with the Kricket and Secondborn books. She has landed on bestseller lists, but the more useful thing to know as a reader is the feel of her work: fast pacing, intense relationships, twists, and heroines who usually have to earn every inch of safety. She writes the kind of story she wanted to read.

These days, Bartol lives in Michigan with her husband and two sons. She has said that travel helps spark new ideas, which fits an author whose stories keep opening doors to stranger worlds.
