Amber Cowie is a novelist who lives in a small town on the west coast of British Columbia. Her books are psychological thrillers built around close relationships, hidden histories, and places that become much harder to leave than they first appear. Remote lakes, storm-bound outposts, quiet streets, and isolated hotels all give her characters plenty of room to keep secrets.

Her route to writing wasn't limited to one neat career track. Cowie has worked a long list of jobs, including serving food at a diner and a ski resort, tending bar in Dublin, planting trees in Canada, and working in hotels, liquor stores, homeless shelters, tax firms, non-profits, and a photocopy shop. She also freelanced for newspapers, snowmobile magazines, and knitwear companies. When she began publishing suspense fiction, that interest in what people hide from one another was already firmly in place.

Then came the dark secrets.

Cowie's debut novel, Rapid Falls, follows sisters Cara and Anna after a fatal accident from their teen years continues to shape their adult lives. The book moves between past and present as old memories begin to shift, and it asks how much damage rivalry, guilt, and family loyalty can do. It was nominated for a Whistler Book Award and set the pattern for the intimate, uneasy stakes of her later novels.

In Raven Lane, a seemingly close neighborhood fractures after a fatal accident and an arrest. The story follows Esme Werner as the people around her start questioning one another, while her own past becomes harder to contain. Loss Lake takes a newly widowed woman to a remote mountain town, where a body in the lake, local folklore, and a community full of guarded residents turn a hoped-for fresh start into something far more dangerous.

Her later books push isolation even further. In Last One Alive, novelist Penelope Berkowitz joins a research trip to a remote Pacific Northwest point tied to the legend of a witch. Cut off by weather and failing communications, the group begins to disappear. The Off Season centers on documentary filmmaker Jane Duvall, who heads to a lonely hotel with her new husband and stepdaughter, only to find that the building and her new family both come with troubling questions.

Nobody gets an easy escape.

Readers often come to Cowie's work for domestic tension and mystery, then stay for the tangled loyalties between friends, neighbors, couples, and relatives. Her protagonists tend to be people trying to begin again, make sense of an old trauma, or hold together a life that looks more stable from the outside than it really is. The natural settings matter, too. Rain, snow, water, wilderness, and bad weather are not just scenery, they close in around the characters.

Cowie holds a history degree from the University of Victoria. She is a mother of two, and outside the page she enjoys skiing, running, and inventing stories that, by her own joking description, can make for a questionable search history. It sounds like useful preparation for a suspense novelist.
