Allies and Enemies Books in Order

The Allies and Enemies books begin with the snap of military science fiction, then widen into a larger, rougher space opera. In Fallen, Amy J Murphy drops readers into a galaxy controlled by the Regime, where conquest, breeding programs, and rigid loyalty shape everyday life. From there, the series keeps expanding, not just in scale but in the number of hard choices its characters have to make.

At the center is Sela Tyron, a purpose-bred soldier who has spent her life following orders and surviving whatever the system throws at her. When a mission goes badly wrong, her bond with Captain Jon Veradin pulls her out of blind obedience and into life as a fugitive. Their connection gives the series much of its emotional pull, but these books are never only about romance. They are about loyalty, duty, and what happens when the world that made you decides you are disposable.

The Reaches are where the story really opens up.

Once Sela and Jon leave the Regime behind, they land in a harsh stretch of space filled with pirates, bounty hunters, gangsters, and Guild agents. Rogues and Exiles lean hard into that frontier feeling. The Reaches are unstable, lawless, and politically loaded, with the Guilds Ironvale, Splitdawn, and Poisoncry all pushing for advantage. That gives the series a nice mix of close-up survival and larger power struggles, so the books can move from a desperate escape to the threat of full-scale war without feeling like they changed genres halfway through.

Erelah Veradin adds another strong thread. She begins as Jon's sister, an engineer who once dreamed of ships and exploration, but her story quickly turns stranger and darker. Captivity, buried truths, and unusual abilities pull her toward the center of the wider conflict. By the time you reach Legacy and Empire, her fight is tied not only to family but to bigger questions about power, technology, and who gets to control whole worlds.

Nobody gets an easy escape.

That is a big part of the appeal. Murphy likes momentum, but she also lets consequences stick. Sela carries anger and grief into the later books, especially once revenge starts shaping her choices, while Jon is pushed into political decisions he never seemed built to enjoy. Expect firefights, betrayals, uneasy alliances, and plenty of pressure, but also a solid thread of found family and stubborn endurance. If you like science fiction with strong women, shifting loyalties, and a setting where even the safe places never stay safe for long, this series is best read in order from Fallen onward.
