Series background & context
The Alexis Parker books start with a woman who is trying very hard to leave one life behind and build another. Alexis Parker is a former federal agent, trained, sharp, and more than a little restless. In Likely Suspects, she takes a private-sector job protecting tech executive James Martin and quickly learns that the work is not going to stay simple for long. Threats turn into conspiracies, clients turn into complications, and Alex finds herself pulled right back toward the kind of danger she was hoping to escape.
That setup powers the whole series.
Alex works as a private investigator, security consultant, and occasional unofficial headache for both the police and her old federal contacts. A case might begin with a death threat, a body in a hotel, a courtroom shooting, a stalker on a movie set, or a suspicious fiance who seems a little too perfect. It rarely stays there. These books like to widen the frame. What first looks like a routine job often opens into fraud, kidnapping, organized crime, cult activity, arson, political messes, or old enemies who have finally decided to come back around.
What makes the series tick is Alex herself. She is competent, sarcastic, stubborn, and very hard on herself. She knows how to read a room, follow a lead, and push past people who think they can bluff their way through an interview. She is also carrying a lot from her years in federal work, and the books never let that disappear. Her past with the Office of International Operations matters. So do the people from that life, especially mentors and colleagues who keep crossing back into the present.
James Martin is a huge part of the ongoing story too. He enters as a client, but the relationship grows well past that, often in awkward, funny, and stressful ways. Their push and pull gives the series some emotional continuity even when the case of the week changes. Crossovers with Lucien Cross, Julian Mercer, and other recurring characters make the world feel connected rather than sealed off.
In tone, these are fast crime thrillers with a strong private-eye streak. There is action, but there is also a lot of investigation, interviewing, surveillance, and old-fashioned piecing things together. The books move through boardrooms, courthouses, hotels, clubs, crime scenes, and back rooms where secrets have been left to rot. Alex usually has to solve the case while dealing with divided loyalties, incomplete evidence, and the fact that official channels are not always enough.
Read them in order if you can.
The long arc is one of the pleasures of the series. Alex changes, relationships deepen, and the consequences of earlier books keep echoing forward. If you want a crime series with a smart lead, a strong supporting cast, and plenty of overlap between personal history and present danger, this is the one to start with.
