Author bio

Alexandria House is an Arkansas native who grew up in the South and first built a career as a registered nurse. Before romance readers knew her for steamy dialogue and big-feeling love stories, she was working in healthcare. Then she made the jump into fiction, and in 2016 she published Higher Love, the book that started her run as an independent author.

She writes about Black love, and she says so plainly.

That directness carries into the books. House's characters are often grown adults with jobs, kids, exes, family baggage, and enough life experience to know what hurts. Even when the setup is flashy, athletes, rappers, artists, public figures, the emotional core usually stays close to home. People are trying to trust again, repair old wounds, or admit they want more than what they have been settling for.

Before the McClains became the series many readers name first, House had already laid down the shape of her world in books like Higher Love, Made to Love, Real Love, and the Strickland Sisters novels. Those stories are full of women who have already been disappointed once and are not eager to volunteer for it again. That grown-up caution, mixed with heat and humor, became one of her signatures.

A lot of readers first meet her through the McClain family books. Let Me Love You made Everett McClain a fan favorite, and Let Me Hold You, Let Me Show You, and Let Me Free You kept expanding that world. Those books show what House does especially well: funny family talk, chemistry that shows up fast, and couples who feel messy in a very human way.

She has never stayed in one lane for long. The Romey University books, starting with Teach Me, bring an HBCU setting to the center and focus on professors, staff, artists, and alumni rather than teen college drama. The sports romances do something similar in a different arena. Flagrant and Personal use the pressure of pro basketball, while Goal takes that energy to hockey.

She also knows how to go short and still hit hard.

Novellas like Set helped prove that. In a much tighter space, House still gives readers heat, humor, and a real emotional shift. Across the whole bibliography, certain threads keep coming back: second chances, protective families, women rebuilding after betrayal, men with rough edges, and relationships that ask people to be honest, not perfect. Even her darker work and side projects still feel connected to that core.

Her success grew quickly, but the route stayed independent. Her books have regularly landed high on bestseller lists, she has been a three-time Audie Award finalist, and she has written three Audible Original projects. She also co-created Audio in Black with fellow author Joan Vassar, a platform built to spotlight Black authors, Black narrators, and Black audiobooks.

These days, House writes full time and stays close to her readership online. She is still described as an Arkansas native with a love of fashion, and that small detail fits the books too. There is style in them, sure, but there is also comfort, humor, and a strong sense of community. That is probably why readers keep coming back. The stories are sexy, but they also feel lived in.
