Series background & context

The Alexandra Jones books are Samantha Towle's move into paranormal romance, and they begin by dropping an ordinary young woman into a life she never asked for. In First Bitten, Alex Jones is dealing with the kind of problems that belong in a normal contemporary romance, a cheating ex, a messy night out, a bad decision, until one encounter changes everything. From that point on, she is no longer moving through a world she understands.

Fast is the only speed these books know.

The creature at the center of the series is the Vârcolac, a vampire and werewolf hybrid, and Alex becomes a rare and dangerous version of it. She is the only female of her kind, which makes her valuable to the wrong people before she has even worked out what she is herself. A lot of the tension comes from that loss of control. Alex is trying to understand her new body, her new instincts, and the rules of a hidden world while enemies are already deciding how they want to use her.

Nathan is the other key piece. He is the mysterious man who helps bring Alex back from death, and the connection between them gives the series its romantic spine. Around him is a shape-shifting family who offer Alex protection, but protection in these books never feels calm or permanent. There is always the sense that safety is temporary, that the next pursuit or betrayal is already on its way.

The setting helps keep the story grounded even when the mythology gets wild. Towle starts with familiar modern life, streets, woods, late-night panic, and then pushes Alex into secret corners of that same world where the rules are completely different. In Original Sin, the story widens and moves to Italy, where Alex hides in Sassano under a new identity, working in a coffee shop and trying to build something that almost feels normal.

That normal life never lasts for long.

What links these books is the push and pull between romance and survival. Alex wants love, safety, and some say over her own future, but she is trapped inside a fate that other people want to control. So the series reads as both supernatural chase story and love story, with fear, longing, secrecy, and identity all tangled together. If you like paranormal romance that mixes attraction with pursuit, hidden creatures, and a heroine learning on the run, First Bitten and Original Sin are the place to start.
