The Alex Quick mysteries follow Alexandra Quick, a former police detective who has made a deliberate second start. After leaving the force, Alex turns to her lifelong interest in art and works on art books and related projects. She still has the habits of an investigator, though. When someone she cares about is in trouble, she notices gaps in a story and finds it hard to leave them alone.

That instinct drives Quick and the Dead. Alex's friend and business partner, art historian Helena Drummond, disappears after reporting that she may be being stalked. Alex soon finds a murdered woman in Helena's home, and the case forces her to ask how well she really knew her friend.

Alex is practical, outspoken, and sometimes a little too willing to take risks once she thinks the police are missing something. Her past gives her useful contacts and an understanding of how investigations work, but she is no longer protected by a badge. That makes the danger feel close whenever her private inquiries upset the wrong person.

The books keep art close to the action without requiring any specialist knowledge. Art historians, collectors, booksellers, old paintings, and questions of ownership all provide texture, while the mysteries themselves focus on hidden connections between people. Alex's work also gives the series a nice reason to move between university towns, country communities, London, and Venice.

In Quick Off the Mark, a childhood friend's brother is found murdered, and Alex uncovers the parts of his life that he kept carefully hidden. Quick on the Draw takes her to Venice to look into thefts from an aristocratic palazzo, where a missing object becomes tied to kidnapping and murder.

These are contemporary British mysteries with a strong amateur-sleuth setup, occasional darker crimes, and a heroine whose new professional life never fully replaces the old one.
