Author bio
Susan Moody was born Susan Elizabeth Horwood in Oxford, England, in 1940. She grew up in the city and later attended Headington School, beginning a life shaped by reading, travel, and a steady interest in telling stories.
Her early adult years took her well beyond Oxford. She lived in France, where she met her first husband, and then spent about a decade in Tennessee before returning to Britain. Her time in the American South, during years of intense social change, later informed some of the questions about race and justice that appear in her crime fiction.
Before becoming known for mysteries, Moody wrote historical fiction under the name Susannah James. She studied with the Open University, earning a degree in 1978, and published her early novels in the 1980s.
Then came Penny Black in 1984. It introduced Penny Wanawake, a wealthy, sharp-eyed photographer and amateur detective with an African diplomat father and an English aristocratic mother. Penny's seven adventures mix murder puzzles with travel, social friction, and a heroine who refuses to be pushed aside.
Moody later created Cassie Swann, a former biology teacher who makes her living playing and teaching bridge. Beginning with Takeout Double, the Cassie books bring murder into country houses, village life, bridge clubs, and Cassie's messy everyday world. The card-game titles are part of the fun, but the books are really about people with secrets and grudges.
In the 2010s, Moody returned to series crime with Alexandra Quick, a former police detective who builds a new career writing art books. In Quick and the Dead, Quick Off the Mark, and Quick on the Draw, Alex's old investigative instincts pull her into cases involving art, old friends, and dangerous buried histories.
She has also written suspense and family novels outside her detective series. The Colour of Hope, written as Susan Madison, follows a family after the loss of a daughter. Losing Nicola returns to a childhood murder decades later, while Dancing in the Dark centers on two adults forced to face painful parts of their pasts.
Moody also wrote Love Over Gold, a novel based on the Gold Blend coffee-advertising romance, and Misselthwaite, published in the United States as Return to the Secret Garden, which imagines Mary, Colin, and Dickon from Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic as adults.
Alongside writing, Moody taught creative writing, including two years as a tutor at Bedford Prison. She has served as chair of the Crime Writers' Association, was president of the International Association of Crime Writers, and is a member of the Detection Club. Her work moves easily between traditional mysteries, relationship dramas, and suspense stories where the past rarely stays quiet.
