Author bio

Alex Kava grew up in the country outside Silver Creek, Nebraska, where chores came first and novels were a rare treat. As a teen she scribbled stories on the backs of old calendars, stashing them in a shoebox under her bed and sharing them only with her younger brother.

The urge to tell stories never really went away.

An art scholarship took her to the College of Saint Mary in Omaha. She graduated magna cum laude with a degree in art and English, paying her way by working nights in a hospital’s central supply department, sterilizing instruments from surgery, pathology, and the morgue — details that would later seep into her fiction.

After college she spent years in advertising and marketing. She designed logos and food packages, wrote brochures and greeting cards, directed radio and TV spots, and eventually ran her own design firm. A stint as director of public relations at her alma mater gave her a close look at how institutions manage image, crisis, and hard truths.

In 1996 she left that steady job to take a serious run at writing. To keep the lights on she revived her design business and wrote whenever she could, juggling client deadlines with early‑morning and late‑night drafting. When her first novel sold, she chose the gender‑neutral name Alex for the cover so publishers and readers would focus on the story, not the woman behind it.

That debut, A Perfect Evil, introduced FBI profiler Maggie O’Dell and a small Nebraska town stalked by a serial killer. Over the next books — including Split Second, The Soul Catcher, At the Stroke of Madness, A Necessary Evil, Exposed, Black Friday, Damaged, Hotwire, Fireproof, Stranded and the prequel Before Evil — readers follow Maggie through cult compounds, bomb scenes, hurricanes, and lonely highway rest stops, as well as through the quieter fallout of family history and trauma.

Kava later launched the Ryder Creed K‑9 series with Breaking Creed. Ryder is a former Marine who rescues unwanted dogs and trains them for scent work in everything from drug interdiction to disaster search‑and‑rescue. The Creed novels, which include Silent Creed, Reckless Creed, Lost Creed, Desperate Creed, Hidden Creed, Fallen Creed and Midnight Creed, often team Ryder with Maggie, blending canine work, manhunts, and natural disasters into one shared world.

Beyond her two main series, Kava has written standalones such as One False Move and Whitewash, along with novellas and collaborations like Slices of Night and the short‑fiction collection Off the Grid. Across all of them she returns to a few obsessions: how ordinary people cross the line into violence, how institutions respond, and what it costs investigators to keep looking into the worst corners of human behavior.

Crime, in her novels, is always about people first.

Her books have sold millions of copies, been published in dozens of countries, and earned honors including multiple state book awards and the Mari Sandoz Award. She is active in thriller and mystery writers’ groups and is known for grounding her plotting in conversations with real‑world investigators, forensic specialists, and K‑9 handlers.

Kava now divides her time between Nebraska and the Florida Gulf Coast, writing full‑time. When she is not at the keyboard she is usually with her pack of West Highland white terriers — not nearly as well trained as Ryder Creed’s dogs, but a daily reminder of why loyal, scruffy sidekicks keep showing up in her stories.
