Author bio

A.J. Stewart writes mysteries and thrillers that know exactly where they are. One book drops you into Palm Beach, another into the French Foreign Legion, another into a hard corner of Southeast Asia. Across all of them, he has a feel for place, pace, and the small details that make trouble feel close.

That wide angle comes from a life spent moving around.

Stewart has lived and worked in Australia, Japan, the UK, Norway, South Africa, San Francisco, Connecticut, and Florida. He now lives in Los Angeles with his wife and son, and that globe-crossing background shows up all over his fiction. His books move easily between Florida marinas, golf clubs, racetracks, hotel bars, European back roads, and conflict zones without ever feeling like postcards.

Sports matter in his work, too. His Goodreads bio jokes that he has lived in so many places he seems to have a home team in every game he watches, which is why his wife starts with, "Who are we rooting for today?" That playful line tells you a lot. Stewart likes games, local loyalties, and the strange worlds that grow up around competition, money, and pride.

For a lot of readers, the obvious starting point is Stiff Arm Steal, the first Miami Jones mystery. Miami is a Florida private investigator with a baseball past, a taste for bars and bad drinks, and a talent for finding the mess under the sunshine. Books like Offside Trap, High Lie, King Tide, and The Ninth Inning show what Stewart does best, crime stories with humor, sports running through the plot, and South Florida corruption never far away.

He can shift gears fast.

In the John Flynn books, beginning with The Final Tour, Stewart moves into a harder military thriller lane. Flynn, a Marine's son who winds up in the French Foreign Legion, deals with war zones, political betrayal, old comrades, and enemies who do not stay buried. Burned Bridges, One for One, and Lost Luggage keep that global, high-pressure feeling, but they still care about loyalty, friendship, and the personal cost of service.

Stewart also likes building out the edges of his fictional world. Temple of Gold reaches back to the earlier adventures of Lenny Cox and Lucas Burnside, while Little Packages lets Danielle Castle step forward from the Miami Jones books and run her own case. Even when the setup changes, the appeal stays pretty steady, sharp plots, crooked people, capable heroes, and a real liking for underdogs.

There is a small comic note in his public bio that fits the books nicely. He says he is working on a screenplay he never plans to produce, mostly because it gives him something to talk about at parties in Los Angeles. That sounds like Stewart's fiction, serious when it needs to be, but never too stiff to crack a smile.

Stewart writes across mystery, action, and adventure, but the through line is easy to spot. He likes smart people under pressure, places with bright surfaces and darker corners, and stories that move. If you want Florida mysteries with personality or thrillers that push far beyond Florida, his shelf gives you both.
