Series background & context

After The Rift steps away from Victorian London into an original fantasy world, while keeping the romance, mystery and character focus that run through CJ Archer’s other series. The books take place in Glancia, a small, previously unimportant kingdom transformed by a single cataclysmic event.

Years before the series starts, a chain of earthquakes tore a headland known as The Thumb away from the mainland. The newly formed chasm, called the Rift, flooded with seawater and cut off a vital trade port. Power shifted. Glancia, once dismissed as a poor backwater on the Fist Peninsula, suddenly owned the most strategic eastern harbor.

In The Palace of Lost Memories, the first book, the king of Glancia builds a magnificent palace near the fishing village of Mull. It appears in a matter of weeks, as if conjured out of the air. No one sees the builders. No locals are hired. Only one servant ever emerges from behind the gilded gates, and she is quickly dragged back inside, leaving the villagers to whisper about magic.

Josie, the village healer’s daughter, has watched the palace from a distance, fascinated and wary. When the king decides to choose a bride from among the noble families, the gates finally open for a bridal competition. Josie enters as her father’s assistant when the royal household needs a physician. Inside she finds not only opulence and political scheming, but a disturbing truth. None of the palace residents, from the kitchen maids to the king himself, remember a life before the palace existed.

Throughout the series, Josie works alongside the captain of the guards, a man known only as Hammer, to untangle what really happened when the palace appeared. The Echo of Broken Dreams, The Whisper of Silenced Voices and The Temple of Forgotten Secrets deepen the mystery, tying it to the wider world beyond Glancia and to old kingdoms that profited from the peninsula’s trade.

The core tension balances court intrigue with personal stakes. Josie is an ordinary woman determined to help people, not a chosen one, yet she keeps being pulled into events that could shake her country. Hammer, capable and loyal, does not know who he was before he walked through the palace gates. Their relationship grows in the gaps between investigations, complicated by secrets, duty and the fear that solving the puzzle might destroy the only home some people have ever known.

After The Rift suits readers who like romantasy with a contained cast, slow revelations and a sense that magic, once revealed, will change the rules for everyone.
