African Covenant Books in Order

African Covenant is Jack Cavanaugh's two-book historical series set in South Africa. The novels follow members of the van der Kemp family across different periods of colonial life, where European settlers, British rule, African communities, hard landscapes, and family expectations all shape the choices people make.

The Pride and the Passion introduces Jan van der Kemp, the eldest son of a South African plantation owner. Jan is proud, angry, and marked by his family's past. Margot de Campion, an orphan of Huguenot background raised in Amsterdam, arrives with wounds of her own. Their first encounters are full of friction, but their lives become increasingly connected as love, grief, danger, and old family pain test them both.

The book uses their relationship to explore a society divided by status, background, and inherited assumptions. Jan and Margot are not simply asked whether they care for one another. They must decide what kind of people they will be when pride, fear, and the expectations of others pull them in different directions.

Quest for the Promised Land moves to nineteenth-century South Africa. Christiaan van der Kemp and his family live in the frontier region of the Cape Colony, where settlers of Dutch descent face British authority, a difficult natural environment, and conflict with the Xhosa. Like many others, the family is pushed toward a harsh migration in search of a place where they hope to live with greater security and freedom.

That journey gives the second book its forward motion, but it also raises questions about belonging and the cost of pursuing a promised future. The family must deal with exhaustion, uncertainty, and the realities of a land already shaped by many competing claims. Faith is present in the series, but it does not make the decisions easy or erase the consequences.
