Author bio

Adriana Herrera was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, and she moved to New York City for graduate school in her early twenties. That sense of living between places never really left her. It shows up all through her fiction, which is full of immigrants, travelers, hard workers, and people trying to build a life that feels fully their own.

Romance found her early.

As a kid, she read constantly, and one of the things that pulled her into the genre was a translated romance set her mother gave her. Years later, after work and family took her around the world, romance was still the kind of book she reached for when she wanted comfort, heat, and a happy ending that actually felt earned.

Writing came from a gap she could feel. Herrera has said she was not seeing enough romances centered on people who looked like her, especially Afro-Latinx, immigrant, and queer characters, so she started writing them herself. By day she works as a trauma therapist in New York City, supporting survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and that grounding in care, survival, and hard-won joy runs through her books.

Her breakout began with the Dreamers books, starting with American Dreamer in 2019. That series follows friends from the South Bronx as they chase work, love, and a future that feels bigger than what the world has offered them. Readers often come for the chemistry, the food, and the warmth, then stay for the way books like American Fairytale, American Love Story, and American Sweethearts treat class, activism, family, and friendship as part of the romance rather than background noise.

Food matters in Herrera's work.

It is there in Nesto's food truck, in the holiday baking sparks of Mangos and Mistletoe, and in the way meals become shorthand for home, care, and desire. Her contemporary romances are sexy and funny, but they are also very interested in work, money, and the question of what it takes to feel safe enough to love someone fully.

She has also moved easily across subgenres. The Dating in Dallas books, including Here to Stay and On the Hustle, lean into glossy workplace romance and city reinvention. Her Las Léonas novels, beginning with A Caribbean Heiress in Paris, shift to 1889 Paris and follow ambitious Caribbean women navigating business, art, medicine, class, and scandal. An Island Princess Starts a Scandal and A Tropical Rebel Gets the Duke show how much fun she can have with historical detail without losing the heat or the emotional pull.

Herrera's books have landed on bestseller lists and picked up major recognition, including an Audie win for On the Hustle. But the clearest through-line is simpler than that. She writes love stories where Afro-Caribbean and Latinx characters get to be centered, messy, desired, political, funny, and happy. She still lives in New York City, and when she is not writing, she has said she likes planning complicated family vacations and hunting down discount Broadway tickets, which feels exactly right for an author whose books are so good at mixing pleasure, logistics, and hope.
