Author bio
Adriana Trigiani has one of the most unique backgrounds in the literary world.
She grew up in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, a small town nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. While the setting was purely Appalachian, her home life was distinctly Italian-American. Her family had roots in Roseto, Pennsylvania, and maintained tight-knit traditions that would later define her storytelling voice. This blend of mountain culture and Italian heritage gave her a perspective that readers instantly recognize in her work.
After finishing her studies at Saint Mary’s College in Indiana, Adriana moved to New York City. She didn't start writing novels immediately. Instead, she jumped into the world of performance and theater.
She founded an all-female comedy troupe, cutting her teeth in front of live audiences. She also worked as a playwright, learning how to construct scenes and dialogue that rang true. These early years in the city were all about hustle and creativity.
Her talent eventually led her to television.
For over a decade, Adriana worked as a writer and executive producer for TV. She wrote for major sitcoms, including The Cosby Show and A Different World. Working in television is a grueling, fast-paced job that requires a sharp ear for how people actually speak. That experience helped hone the witty, natural dialogue that her fans love today.
In 2000, her career took a major turn.
She published Big Stone Gap, a novel that introduced the world to the quirks and charms of her hometown. The book was a hit. It wasn't just a story; it was a love letter to the small-town eccentrics and the landscape she grew up in.
Since that debut, she has been incredibly prolific. Adriana is known for publishing a novel almost every year. She doesn't stick to just one genre, either. She writes contemporary fiction, such as the Valentine trilogy, which follows a family in the shoemaking business. She also writes sweeping historical epics.
One of her most beloved books, The Shoemaker’s Wife, travels back in time and across the ocean. It captures the grandeur of the opera and the struggle of the immigrant experience.
Through all her books, certain themes stand out.
She loves to write about people who work with their hands. Whether it is cooking, sewing, or making shoes, she celebrates craftsmanship. She honors the working-class roots of her ancestors and the incredibly strong bonds found in immigrant families. Her stories are often about resilience and the way families hold together through difficult times.
Her creativity extends beyond novels.
Because food is such a central part of her life and heritage, she has written cookbooks that share her family's favorite recipes. She has also written nonfiction. In a rare move for a novelist, she even directed the film adaptation of Big Stone Gap. She filmed it on location in her hometown, bringing her original vision full circle.
Today, Adriana lives in Greenwich Village with her family.
She remains a celebrated voice in fiction, known for her warmth and her ability to make readers feel like they are sitting around a family dinner table. She continues to write stories that highlight the beauty of everyday life and the history that shapes us.
