Author bio

ACF Bookens is the cozy mystery pen name of writer, editor, and teacher Andi Cumbo-Floyd. Her fiction feels built from the things she clearly loves most, books, old stories, small communities, and the quiet places where history still hangs around. If you have ever wanted a mystery with a bookstore, a salvage yard, or a stack of rare books at the center, you are in the right corner of her work.

Home is Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, a landscape of back roads and long views that fits her fiction well. She has said she loves a good mystery, a quaint bookshop, and a good cup of coffee. That combination, along with a real affection for animals, runs straight through her series.

Cumbo-Floyd did not start out in just one lane. She writes and edits, has published work outside mystery, and also writes romantic comedies as Andrea Cumbo. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing and an MA in Literature, and she has taught at George Mason University, Cecil College, Stevenson University, Santa Clara University, and Solano College. There is a teacher's habit in her books too, a sense that stories can entertain while still asking readers to notice the world around them.

When she decided to write cozy mysteries, she gave that part of her work its own name. ACF Bookens became the shelf for stories that mix murder with community, humor, and a strong sense of place. The pen name let her separate these books from her other work while leaning all the way into a genre she clearly enjoys.

The mysteries came fast once that door opened.

Publishable By Death introduced Harvey Beckett, a bookseller in St. Marin's on Maryland's Eastern Shore, and set the tone for a series full of local festivals, loyal friends, and dead bodies in inconvenient places. Crossed By Death moved into different territory with Paisley Sutton, a salvage expert and historian whose work in old buildings keeps uncovering buried crimes. Then Fatalities and Folios launched Poe Baxter, a former English professor turned antiquarian book dealer, sending the mysteries onto an international track. Readers who like bookish settings often land on Tome To Tomb or Picture Book Peril. Readers who like restoration, family history, and small-town secrets tend to drift toward Bobbins And Bodies or Sewn At The Crime.

What ties these books together is not just murder. Bookens returns again and again to questions of justice, memory, and who gets remembered accurately. Old houses matter. Archives matter. Local legends matter. So do the people a town overlooks. She has also been direct about not treating white characters as the default on the page, and that choice gives her fiction a broader, more grounded social world than some cozy series aim for.

She also seems to enjoy giving pets excellent supporting roles.

These days, along with writing fiction, she edits manuscripts, coaches other writers, and helps run Mountain Ash Press with Caroline Topperman. She has written about cross stitching, walking, gardening, and spending time with friends in Charlottesville or Richmond when she gets the chance. That mix of writerly work and ordinary life suits her books. They are warm, busy, curious stories, made by someone who loves reading, loves place, and knows that even the quietest town usually has a secret or two.
