Series background & context
The Abby McCree mysteries begin when Abby, newly divorced and looking for a reset, inherits her Aunt Sybil's old home in Snowberry Creek, Washington. The house comes with more than worn floorboards and family memories. Abby also inherits a huge, drooly dog named Zeke, a steady stream of Aunt Sybil's friends, and a tenant in the backyard cottage, former Special Forces soldier Tripp Blackston.
It is not the quiet new beginning Abby had in mind.
Snowberry Creek is the kind of town where people know one another's habits, meals, grudges, and business. It is also a place that loves a committee. Abby keeps getting drawn into town events, whether that means helping with a quilting group, a Halloween festival, a charity auction, outdoor movies, a 5K race, or an arts and crafts fair. Every event brings a crowd, a list of competing interests, and eventually a murder that makes Abby ask more questions than the police would prefer.
Abby is not a detective by training. She is practical, observant, and often reluctant to get involved, especially once she realizes how often danger finds her. But she cares about the people around her, and she is not willing to let a friend, a neighbor, or the memory of Aunt Sybil take the blame for something they did not do.
The series has a cozy, community-centered feel, with local food, civic projects, quilting, seasonal celebrations, and Zeke's oversized personality balancing the crimes. The mysteries are self-contained, so readers can follow the central case in each book. Still, reading in order gives the best view of Abby's growing ties to Snowberry Creek and the slow change in her relationship with Tripp.
Tripp matters to the series well beyond being Abby's tenant. His military experience, his concern for other veterans, and his calm presence often put him close to the action. Abby's friends, her mother Phoebe, local police, and the women who knew Aunt Sybil also make Snowberry Creek feel lived in.
These are mysteries about a woman building a home while repeatedly having to protect it. The crimes may interrupt the town calendar, but the friendships and everyday humor are what keep Abby coming back.
