A Town Called Christmas

by Holly Martin

2016

Neve Whitaker loves managing the Stardust Lake Hotel on Juniper Island but has never forgotten Oakley, the man she urged to chase his dreams abroad. When he returns for Christmas, buried feelings, a life changing secret and a picture perfect winter wonderland force them to face the past.

Series background & context

The A Town Called Christmas books take readers to Juniper Island, a snow covered escape off the Scottish coast where Christmas lasts just a little longer than it does anywhere else. At the heart of the series is the Stardust Lake Hotel, a family run retreat that glows with roaring fires, fairy lights and frozen views over the water.

In Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky we meet travel journalist Piper Chesterfield. Her job is to visit luxury hotels around the world and write honest, often brutally honest, reviews. Piper has built a life that keeps her moving, never letting her stay long enough to put down roots or risk having her heart broken again. When she is sent to review a new winter resort on Juniper Island, she discovers that the man behind the Stardust Lake Hotel is Gabe Whitaker, the childhood friend and first love she once left without a word.

The book weaves together the glamour of a destination hotel launch with the quieter ache of unresolved feelings. Snowstorms, husky sled rides, Christmas markets and cosy evenings by the fire form the backdrop as Piper and Gabe are forced to confront old wounds and decide whether this magical island can become a home for both of them.

A Town Called Christmas shifts the focus to Neve, Gabe’s sister, who manages the hotel through another busy festive season. She loves her job, her family and the rhythms of island life, but carries the memory of a relationship that ended when she encouraged her boyfriend Oakley to follow his dream overseas. Years later he returns to Juniper Island for Christmas, and Neve must face the possibility that the love she gave up might be offered back to her.

Across both novels, Juniper Island feels like a full world. There are star filled skies over frozen lakes, cosy cabins, and a tight knit group of locals who treat the hotel staff and returning visitors as family. The stories explore what it means to come home, to forgive past mistakes and to believe that love can be rekindled in the unlikeliest of circumstances.

These books are ideal for readers who enjoy second chance romances wrapped in all the trimmings of the holiday season. While each title stands alone, reading them together gives a satisfying sense of life continuing at the Stardust Lake Hotel as one couple’s happy ending becomes the starting point for another.
