Series background & context

A Royal Match revolves around one of Julia London's best series devices, a seasoned matchmaker who knows exactly how society works and is happy to bend it when love deserves better. Lady Lila Aleksander, once a scandal-shadowed English beauty and now happily married to a Danish prince, has spent years arranging marriages for Europe's elite. She has a particular soft spot for people who are being told they cannot possibly marry the right person.

That frame lets the series play with courtship from a slightly sideways angle. The books follow royals and titled people moving through England under pressure to marry well, behave correctly, and protect family interests. Lila is often just offstage, nudging, observing, and quietly making life impossible for bad matches.

The run begins with Last Duke Standing and continues through The Duke Not Taken, The Viscount Who Vexed Me, and An Inconvenient Earl. The connecting royal thread comes through the Weslorian family and the wider European marriage market, but each book stands on its own with a different couple, a different personality clash, and a different form of matchmaking mischief.

These books are bright, romantic, and very aware of the gap between what a person should want and what they actually do want. If you like historicals with royal heroines, sharp banter, and a clever woman pulling strings in the background, this is a strong late-period Julia London series.
