Series background & context

The Secrets of Hadley Green books are built on a mystery that reaches backward before the romances begin. Years earlier, a man in the village of Hadley Green was executed for stealing the Ashwood jewels. By the time Julia London opens the series, questions still hang over that case, and nearly everyone connected to Ashwood seems to be carrying a secret of some kind.

That long shadow gives the series its shape. These books are not mysteries in the detective-novel sense, but they do use hidden identities, uncertain loyalties, buried history, and dangerous bits of old evidence to keep the tension moving. Country-house politics matter. So do inheritance, gossip, and the sort of family damage that can sit quietly for years before it blows open.

The Year of Living Scandalously starts the investigation with Keira Hannigan, who is impersonating her cousin when Declan O'Connor catches her at it. The Christmas Secret offers a shorter holiday story tied to the same family circle. The Revenge of Lord Eberlin and The Seduction of Lady X keep turning the Ashwood story from new angles, and The Last Debutante carries the series into the Highlands without losing the family thread.

If you like your historical romance with a strong connective spine, this series is especially satisfying. The love stories matter, but so does the slow uncovering of what really happened at Hadley Green.
