The tone of the series sits somewhere between suspense thriller and private-eye story. Lucien is a businessman, but he is also a little vain, a little reckless, and not nearly as smooth as he would probably like people to believe. That makes him fun to follow. He is capable, but he makes mistakes. Sometimes he bites off more than he should. Sometimes he takes a case because the money is good or because he cannot stand backing down. The result is a series where danger often grows out of human weakness as much as criminal planning.

Lucien is not a classic lone wolf.

He is at his most interesting when the job forces him to rely on other people he does not fully trust, whether that means clients, allies, or rivals. The books understand that investigation work is rarely clean. Motives shift. People lie. Good intentions are not always enough.
