3 Best Donna Tartt Books

The best Donna Tartt books, ranked by how many expert sources recommend each one, with notes on their different styles and which novel to read first.

Our take

Donna Tartt writes long, absorbing novels in which beauty, belonging and moral compromise become difficult to separate. Crime matters in all three books here, but so do memory, grief, class and the stories people tell themselves. Her characters can be compelling company without being admirable, and the detailed settings reward readers willing to settle into a slower pace.

The Secret History offers a tightly enclosed college world, with psychological tension built around a group of classics students. The Goldfinch has a wider reach, following a young life through loss, friendship and the pull of art. The Little Friend shifts to Mississippi and a child’s view of family and danger, drawing more heavily on Southern Gothic atmosphere. These are standalone novels, so you can choose by mood rather than follow a series.

Start with The Secret History for the campus setting and concentrated tension, or The Goldfinch if you prefer a sprawling coming-of-age novel.

1

The Goldfinch

by Donna Tartt2013

For readers who want a long coming-of-age novel with emotional intensity and a strong interest in art. Its scope offers more variety than the campus setting of The Secret History, but the digressions can slow its momentum.

What it's about

After an explosion at a museum kills his mother, thirteen-year-old Theo Decker clings to a small painting that pulls him into grief, crime, and the art underworld. It is a sweeping coming-of-age novel about loss, obsession, and survival.

The Secret History

by Donna Tartt1992

For readers drawn to campus atmosphere, difficult friendships and the psychology of complicity. Its enclosed world makes a strong introduction to Tartt, but the self-absorbed characters and deliberate pace will not suit every thriller reader.

What it's about

Richard Papen arrives at an elite Vermont college and falls in with a closed circle of classics students. Their search for beauty and belonging leads to violence, guilt, and a murder that shadows every page.

3

The Little Friend

by Donna Tartt2002

For readers who value Southern Gothic atmosphere and a child’s limited understanding of adult troubles. Its family and community detail rewards patience, but the meandering pace can frustrate readers expecting a tightly organized detective novel.

What it's about

In a Mississippi town still marked by an unsolved killing, twelve-year-old Harriet Dufresnes decides to find the truth about her brother's death. Her search pulls her through family grief, class tension, and dangers she only half understands.
