Author bio
Zoraida Córdova was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and moved to the United States as a child. She grew up in Queens, New York, and that mix of places still shows up in her work, where home is rarely simple and magic usually arrives tangled up with family.
She started writing young.
At thirteen, she read Amelia Atwater-Rhodes and realized a teenager could actually write books that made it into the world. That mattered. Around the same time, she attended the National Book Foundation's writing camp, which helped turn a private habit into something that felt possible as a life.
She later studied English Literature and Latino Studies at Hunter College and the University of Montana in Missoula. The path after that was not just one thing. She kept writing across age categories and genres, building a body of work that moves from young adult fantasy to middle grade adventure, adult fiction, Star Wars, and romance under other names.
A lot of readers first meet her through Brooklyn Brujas, beginning with Labyrinth Lost. Those books follow the Mortiz sisters through Brooklyn, other realms, family secrets, and dangerous magic shaped by Latin American traditions. Readers tend to like the mix of fast plotting, sister drama, queer love stories, and the feeling that magic is never just decorative. It always costs somebody something. Labyrinth Lost won an International Latino Book Award, and the trilogy deepened with Bruja Born and Wayward Witch.
Family is usually the spark in her books, and magic is what makes the trouble visible.
You can see that in very different corners of her shelf. The Vicious Deep kicks off a sea-soaked YA trilogy about Tristan Hart, a Coney Island kid who learns he is tied to an undersea throne. Incendiary and Illusionary turn toward rebellion, memory theft, and court politics in a fantasy world inspired by Inquisition Spain. Then The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina opens outward into adult fiction, following a sprawling family whose blessings and wounds both trace back to one unforgettable matriarch.
She also writes for younger readers without talking down to them. In The Way to Rio Luna, a boy chases a magical route to find his missing sister. In Valentina Salazar Is Not a Monster Hunter, a grieving family of monster protectors has to decide what kind of mission still binds them together. Both books keep her usual interests close by: belief, belonging, and kids who refuse to let the people they love disappear quietly.
Córdova has also written inside shared worlds. Her Star Wars books include A Crash of Fate, a Batuu-set adventure with romance at its center, and later Convergence and Beware the Nameless for The High Republic. Even in a galaxy far, far away, her stories keep circling the same human questions. Who do you trust? What do you owe your family? What version of yourself are you willing to become?
Her career is wider than one byline. She has written adult romance as Zoey Castile and other pseudonyms, co-edited Vampires Never Get Old, edited Reclaim the Stars, serves on the board of We Need Diverse Books, and works in story development outside her novels as well. She now calls New York City home and, by her own bio, spends her off-hours roaming in search of magical stories. That feels like a neat summary of the books too.
