Series background & context

The Detective Zoe Finch series is Rachel McLean’s first crime series, and it starts in Birmingham with a newly promoted Detective Inspector who has a lot to prove. Zoe is ambitious, sharp, and not always good at keeping her private life separate from the job. That makes her cases feel personal, even when the crimes are large and ugly.

The opening book, Deadly Wishes, throws Zoe into the murder of Assistant Chief Constable Bryn Jackson. It also opens a much bigger story about police corruption, organised crime, and the long shadow of the Canary investigation. That arc carries through the main books and gives the series a strong through-line.

This is police procedural territory, but it is not only about clues.

Zoe’s team matters. DS Mo Uddin, DC Connie Williams, DC Rhodri Hughes, and DCI Lesley Clarke all bring different pressures and loyalties into the room. Zoe also has a son, Nicholas, and her need to protect him sits uneasily beside a job that keeps pulling danger closer to home. Her relationship with DI Carl Whaley adds another layer, especially as Professional Standards and corruption investigations begin to overlap with her murder cases.

Birmingham is more than a backdrop. Cadbury World, the university area, the city’s gay village, New Street Station, the Christmas market, and everyday streets around Selly Oak and beyond all become part of the investigations. McLean uses the city as a living place, full of work, family, politics, and hidden networks.

The series works well if you like a detective story with case-by-case momentum and a larger conspiracy building in the background. Read it in order if you can. The corruption plot grows from book to book, and later events land better when you know what Zoe and her team have already survived.
