The Zion Sawyer books are M.L. Hamilton's cozy mystery series, and they begin with a premise that changes one woman's life all at once. Zion Sawyer is working customer service for an insurance company in San Francisco when she gets a call from a lawyer in Sequoia, California. The news is strange and personal: she has inherited the estate of the biological mother she never knew.

That inheritance is the doorway into the series. Zion heads to Sequoia, learns more about the mother she never met, and ends up with a new town, a new set of questions, and a coffee shop called the Caffeinator. From there the series becomes part amateur sleuth mystery, part small-town reinvention story. Zion is not a cop, but she is smart, observant, and not especially good at leaving a suspicious situation alone.

Sequoia does a lot of work for these books.

It is a tourist town with quirky residents, local festivals, seasonal business, and the kind of tightly woven community where everyone knows more than they say. That makes it ideal cozy-mystery ground. Zion's closest recurring connection on the investigative side is Tate Mercer, an ex-cop who keeps getting pulled back into murder cases with her. Their relationship adds warmth and tension without taking over the whole story.

The coffee-themed titles, from Cappuccino and Cafe Au Lait to Cafe Latte and Cafe Mocha, tell you something about the mood. These books are lighter on-page than Peyton Brooks, but they are not empty calories. Hamilton uses the cozy frame to talk about family, adoption, belonging, and what it means to choose a place and let it become home.

If you like mysteries with a strong sense of community, recurring townsfolk, a hint of romance, and crimes that arrive in the middle of everyday routines, Zion Sawyer is easy to like. The cases matter, but so does the town. By the time you spend a few books with Zion, Tate, and the people orbiting the Caffeinator, Sequoia is part of the reason you keep reading.
